Jahrhundert schloss sich Wilhelm Christian Theodor Gadau, ein Nachkom me französischer Hugenotten, mit örtlichen Bauern zusam men, um eine Brennerei zu bauen. Als Brennmeister von Calvörde stellte er Kapital für das Tischlerunternehmen seines Sohnes Karl in Wuppertal zur Verfügung. Der Erste Weltkrieg beendete die Brennerei, und die Ära der Destillation der Familie Gadau endete 1918. Karl hatte drei Töchter, und Anne Elisabeth brachte 1938 in Wuppertal Erika Renate zur Welt.
